Entry 3, Marking Period 1

www.psdancenyc.com

Please watch this short documentary about dance in the public schools. I feel it describes so well what dance is in school. The students are teachers are so amazing. I am so grateful to work at such a wonderful school with such awesome movers. We are doing great work here and all students should be so fortunate to have a beautiful dance studio and supportive community. I am attaching two dance photos of me as a kid as that is part of the movement. If you watch the documentary you can see me for about 2 seconds in the professional development section about to dance.

Entry 2, Marking Period 1

I am really looking forward to seeing this documentary about ABT's first black principal dancer, Misty Copeland. I read her memoir this summer and it was very inspirational and emotional. I saw her perform the role of Clara in ABT's version of the Nutcracker at BAM last winter and she is breathtaking. I grew up doing ballet 4-5 times per week and loved it so much. As I've gotten older my interests have shifted towards contemporary dance, but ballet will always be my first dance love. I am inspired by her drive and dedication to her art form. There were many sentences that I related to in her book especially when she described that moving and dancing just makes her feel whole. I encourage anyone to watch the videos under the video link on the website.

Entry 1, Marking Period 1

Hey Dancers! I decided that I want to do the blog assignment, just like you every marking period. For our first unit, we will be studying the human anatomy specifically the bones and muscles and I've been coming up with some interesting choreography to help us come to a deeper understanding of our abilities as dancers and as people in general. I subscribe to Top 100 tracks currently on spotify on my spotify subscription to get new song ideas for class. This weekend I found this song called African Scream, that we are going to be using for class choreo. I found an article about the artist. He is 16 years old!! He is following his passion for music and I found the article to be very interesting.

Blog Entry Suggestions

Your blog entries should reflect a deep understanding of your growth and progress as a dancer, but also demonstrate your interest in dance history or the current dance world. Entries must be at least five sentences. You may be as creative as you would like. I'm not looking for anything specific, but here are some suggestions if you need some help getting started:
  • Post a link to an interview with a choreographer related to the unit we are studying (for example, an interview with Robert Battle during the Contemporary Choreographers unit or an interview with Bob Fossee during the Jazz unit). Respond to the interview with your reflection.
  • Write a reflection about the Salsa residency/performance with Ms. Rebecca (compare and contrast with last year-8th grade only).
  • Post a video of a dance performance clip that interests you. Respond to the interview with your reflection.
  • Write a review of a dance book you've read. For example, Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina by Misty Copeland.
  • Post a dance photo or video of yourself and/or your friends (with their permission of course) and write a reflection about the choreography or experience.
Have fun with this blog. It's your creation and should interest you more than anyone else.
